Do You Need a Video Smart Lock? Doorbell-Camera Locks in Singapore

Video smart locks are the newest thing on the digital lock shelf in Singapore: a lock with a small doorbell camera built into the front, so one device secures the entrance and shows you who is standing at it. On paper it sounds like the obvious upgrade. In practice, whether it is worth the extra money depends on how your household uses the entrance, and on one detail of HDB layout that catches a lot of buyers out.

We fit digital locks on doors and gates across Singapore every week, and camera models now come up in almost every conversation. Here is the honest version of who benefits, who does not, and where the camera should actually go.

What is a video smart lock?

A video smart lock is a digital lock with a doorbell camera built into the lock body, so locking, unlocking and seeing who is outside are handled by one device. Instead of pairing a separate camera doorbell with your smart lock, the camera lives in the lock itself.

In the OpenTouch range, that model is the Touch 300 Pro, a metal gate lock with a 1080p live doorcam alongside facial recognition, palm vein and fingerprint unlocking. Everything else about it works like a normal digital lock: anti-peeping PIN codes, Mifare RFID cards, app access over WiFi, and a mechanical key backup where fitted.

The camera does not change how you unlock. It changes what you can see. That distinction matters more than most spec sheets admit, and it is the heart of the buying decision below.

Do you actually need a camera on your lock?

Many households honestly do not. A camera earns its keep when you regularly need to see your entrance while you are not standing at it. If visitors are rare and your routine is predictable, a fingerprint or facial recognition lock does the same daily job for less.

In our experience the camera pays off in a few specific situations:

  • Frequent deliveries. Parcels and food orders arrive almost daily in many Singapore homes, and a doorcam lets you see the rider, or the parcel left hanging on the gate, from wherever you are.
  • Kids answering the gate. You can check who they are about to let in, even from the office.
  • Elderly parents home alone. You can glance at the entrance yourself before telling them it is fine to open up.
  • Landlords and second properties. A quick look at the entrance without travelling over.

A useful test: count how many times in the past month you wished you could see who was at your gate. If the answer is close to zero, the camera is a nice-to-have, and the money is often better spent on a gate and door bundle instead.

Where should a lock camera go in an HDB flat?

On the gate, almost always. Most HDB and BTO flats have a metal gate in front of the wooden main door, and the gate is what faces the corridor, the lift lobby and every visitor. A camera mounted on the main door mostly films the back of your own gate.

This is the single most common mistake we see buyers make when comparing models online. Door locks and gate locks are different products, and camera or facial recognition features belong on the outward-facing one. That is why the camera model in the OpenTouch range is a gate lock, while the wooden door behind it usually gets a slim, fast fingerprint lock such as the Touch 200D or Touch i19.

The full reasoning, including condo and landed layouts where there is no gate in front of the door, is in our guide on whether a smart lock belongs on your gate or your door.

What can a live doorcam actually do?

On the Touch 300 Pro, the built-in 1080p doorcam lets you see visitors and deliveries at your gate, open a live view from your phone, and keep a live eye on your gate when nobody is home. Video features run through the Tuya or Smart Life app over your home WiFi.

In day-to-day use, that typically looks like:

  • Opening a live view of your gate from the office when a delivery is due.
  • Confirming a parcel was actually left at the gate.
  • Seeing who is outside before you, your kids or your parents open the door.

Keep expectations grounded. A doorcam is aimed at doorstep distance, a metre or two from the lock, and it is designed for identifying visitors rather than replacing a full CCTV system. At that range, 1080p is typically more than enough to recognise a face or read a courier uniform.

Video lock vs a separate video doorbell: which is simpler?

The video lock is simpler: one device to install, one app to check, one set of batteries to think about. A separate video doorbell adds a second gadget to mount, power and maintain, though it does give you more freedom over where the camera points.

Points in favour of the combined lock:

  • One clean unit on the gate instead of a lock plus a doorbell stuck beside it.
  • Installation is handled once. OpenTouch locks come with free certified same-day installation across Singapore, so there is no second product to mount and wire up.
  • The camera sits exactly where visitors stand: at the lock.

Points in favour of a separate doorbell:

  • You can position it independently, which helps in landed homes where the gate is far from the front door.
  • If one device fails, the other keeps working.
  • You may already own one. If it works well, keep it and choose a non-camera gate lock instead.

What about privacy and PDPA when recording your entrance?

Cameras at residential entrances are common in Singapore, and using one for your own home security is generally considered reasonable. Still, an HDB corridor is a shared space, so it pays to be a good neighbour about it.

Sensible habits we suggest to every camera-lock customer:

  • Keep the camera aimed at your own doorstep. A doorcam built into the lock naturally has a more contained view than a wide-angle CCTV camera, which helps.
  • Do not angle anything toward a neighbour's doorway or window.
  • Treat footage as private. Posting clips of neighbours or passers-by online can create PDPA and harassment problems even when the recording itself was unremarkable.
  • If you are recording for anything beyond personal or household purposes, for example a home business, check current PDPC guidance, since different obligations can apply.

Which OpenTouch model has a camera?

The Touch 300 Pro is the camera model in the OpenTouch range: a gate lock with a 1080p live doorcam, facial recognition, palm vein and fingerprint unlocking, plus PIN, RFID card and app access. It is the flagship, and the palm vein reader is unique to it in our lineup.

Around it sit the Touch 200, a dependable fingerprint gate lock, and the Touch 200 Pro, which adds facial recognition but no camera feed. For the wooden door behind the gate, the Touch 200D, Touch i19 and Touch i9 cover fingerprint push-pull duties. The whole range runs roughly S$319 to S$459, GST-inclusive at 9%, with free same-day installation and a 2-year local warranty.

If you are still weighing hands-free unlocking against video, our fingerprint versus facial recognition comparison covers the unlock side, and the gate smart lock guide covers everything gate-specific.

Is a video lock worth the money for you?

It is worth it if you regularly need eyes on your entrance while you are away from it. It is not worth it if visitors are rare and your routine is steady, because a fingerprint or facial gate lock covers the daily unlocking job for less.

Budget plays a part too. The step up to a camera model is real money, so weigh it against the rest of the entrance: sometimes a mid-range gate lock plus a door lock beats one flagship on the gate alone. Our cost and GST breakdown lays out the numbers, and the complete buying guide walks the whole decision end to end.
