Digital Lock Bundle for HDB Gate and Door: Buy the Pair or Just One Lock?
You are collecting the keys to an HDB or BTO flat, the entrance has a metal gate in front of a wooden door, and every retailer is pushing a digital lock bundle for the pair. The price gap between one lock and two is a few hundred dollars, and once the installer has drilled the gate and the door you are committed to that combination for years. This guide is about getting the pairing right the first time, or deciding honestly that you only need one lock.
We fit smart locks on gates and wooden doors across Singapore, and the bundle question comes up at nearly every BTO handover. The short version: a gate and door digital lock bundle suits most households that use both barriers daily, one lock is enough for more homes than retailers admit, and the two locks in a pair should be chosen for different jobs rather than as a matching set.
Why do HDB flats have a metal gate and a wooden door?
Because HDB builds them that way. New BTO flats come with a laminated timber main door and a metal gate as standard, so almost every flat in Singapore starts life with two barriers at the entrance.
The Sembawang Deck sales brochure from the February 2026 BTO launch lists the entrance provision as exactly that: laminated timber door and metal gate. Resale flats follow the same pattern.
The two barriers do different work. The gate faces the corridor and takes the weather. The wooden door is the real security barrier and, in many blocks, a fire-rated door with a door closer. HDB's home care guide notes that this self-closing device must not be removed, which matters when you choose a door lock later.
Do I need a digital lock on both the gate and the door?
Not always. You need two locks if your household opens and closes both barriers every day. If one of them stays open or stays bolted most of the time, a single smart lock on the barrier you actually use does the job for less.
Think about how the entrance is used, not how it looks. Many families keep the wooden door open for airflow while home and rely on the gate, then lock both at night and when they go out. For them, two keys become two fingerprints.
Other households almost never touch the gate and treat the wooden door as the real lock. A second digital lock on that gate would be a gadget nobody uses. Our post on whether a smart lock belongs on the gate or the door covers placement in detail, so here we focus on the bundle decision itself.
When is one lock enough, and which one should it be?
One lock is enough when you consistently rely on a single barrier. Put it on the gate if the door stays open while you are home, and on the door if the gate is usually left open or you want the flat secured even when the gate is ajar.
Patterns we see often:
- Couples who both work, few visitors, gate latched behind them: a door lock alone, such as the Touch 200D or Touch i19, covers nearly everything.
- Multi-generational homes where the door is open all day and the gate does the work: a gate lock alone, often the Touch 200 Pro so grandparents can use facial recognition instead of a key.
- Rented rooms or helpers coming and going: a gate lock with temporary PIN codes, because the gate is where you control access without handing out keys.
Who should not buy a bundle yet: anyone replacing the gate or main door within the year. Gate replacement needs no HDB permit as long as the width, number of panels and swing match the original, but fit locks after the renovation, not before.
How should I choose the gate lock in a bundle?
Choose the gate lock for visibility and hands-free entry, because the gate is the outward-facing barrier. Facial recognition and cameras belong here, not on the wooden door behind it.
Three things separate gate locks:
- Unlock methods. Fingerprint, PIN and card are the baseline. Facial recognition adds hands-free entry for parents carrying children or groceries, and a live camera lets you see the corridor from your phone. In the OpenTouch range that maps to the Touch 200 (fingerprint), Touch 200 Pro (adds face) and Touch 300 Pro (adds a 1080p doorcam and palm vein).
- Battery type. The Touch 200 and 200 Pro run on four AA alkaline batteries that you swap when the low-battery alert appears. The Touch 300 Pro uses a rechargeable lithium pack charged over USB Type-C. AA cells can be bought at any minimart; rechargeable packs mean no battery shopping.
- Weather exposure. Most HDB corridors are sheltered, but corner units and open-deck blocks get rain on the gate. The Touch 300 Pro has an optional IP66 upgrade at S$80 for this.
All three OpenTouch gate locks include WiFi through the Tuya or Smart Life app, so app control and auto-relock are available whichever gate model you pick. If you are weighing face against fingerprint, our fingerprint versus facial recognition comparison goes deeper.
How should I choose the door lock in a bundle?
Choose the door lock for speed and reliability on the barrier you touch most, and match it to the door's construction. Fingerprint plus a PIN is enough for most wooden doors; the extra features can live on the gate.
The door lock decision has three parts:
- Format. The Touch 200D is a wooden-door lock with a knob turn to exit and built-in WiFi. The Touch i19 is a slim mortise lock that sits inside the door edge for a clean look. The Touch i9 is a slim deadbolt. Your installer should confirm which one your door's existing cutouts accept.
- Connectivity. The Touch 200D has WiFi built in at S$319. The i19 and i9 come as Standard (fingerprint, PIN, card, key) at S$459 or Premium at S$499, which adds facial recognition, WiFi with app control, remote unlock, temporary passwords and two-way video call. If your gate lock already has WiFi, a Standard door lock is a sensible saving.
- Fire-rated doors. HDB's renovation guidelines for building works state that, under SCDF requirements, digital locksets on fire-rated main doors must carry a Certificate of Conformity to SS 332 or EN 1634-1 from a local certification body. If your main door is fire-rated, confirm the certification status of any lock you are considering, including ours, on WhatsApp before ordering, and never remove the door closer.
All door locks in our range run on rechargeable lithium batteries. The full set of HDB door rules, including when a permit is needed, is in our HDB digital lock rules guide.
What should I check in any brand's gate and door bundle?
Check who installs both locks, whether the warranty covers both for the same period, how fingerprints are enrolled across the pair, and whether each lock physically fits your gate and door. Bundles are sold as one item but installed and serviced as two.
Run through this list before paying, whichever brand you buy:
- Installation for both locks. Some retailers price the hardware and leave installation as a separate third-party cost. OpenTouch includes free certified installation across Singapore for every lock.
- Warranty on both locks, in writing, for the same term and serviced locally. OpenTouch locks carry a 2-year local warranty with Singapore-based WhatsApp support.
- Fingerprint enrolment. In most pairs each lock stores its own fingerprints, so expect to enrol every family member twice unless the brand states otherwise. Ask whether one app manages both locks.
- Gate compatibility. Metal gates vary in bar spacing and flat mounting surfaces. Send photos before booking so the installer can flag any bracket needed.
- Door compatibility. Confirm the door lock format matches your door's cutouts and works alongside a door closer if the door is fire-rated.
- A mechanical key or other override on both locks.
How much does a gate and door digital lock bundle cost in Singapore?
Across mainstream Singapore retailers in 2026, a named-brand gate and door pair typically lists between roughly S$900 and S$1,400 before promotions, with clearance deals sometimes under S$700. The OpenTouch Gate and Door Bundle runs from S$459 to S$799 depending on the pair, GST-inclusive, installation included.
Retailer listings often exclude installation, so compare the all-in figure rather than the sticker price. Our smart lock cost guide explains how GST and installation feed into the final number.
Within the OpenTouch range, the bundle price depends on which gate lock and which door lock you combine. The cheapest pairing starts from S$459, less than the two cheapest locks bought separately at S$319 each, and the most capable pairing reaches S$799. The exact price for your combination is shown on the bundle page once you select the two locks.
Which gate and door pairing suits my household?
Match the gate lock to who comes to the gate and the door lock to who uses the door most. The table maps common HDB households to a pairing from the OpenTouch range, with individual list prices so you can see what the bundle replaces.
| Household | Gate lock | Door lock | Individual list prices | Why this pairing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple or small family, value-focused, both barriers used daily | Touch 200 (fingerprint, WiFi) | Touch 200D (fingerprint, WiFi) | S$319 + S$319 | Two fast fingerprint locks with app control on both. The bundle range starts from S$459. |
| Family with young kids or elderly parents | Touch 200 Pro (adds facial recognition) | Touch 200D | S$359 + S$319 | Hands-free face unlock at the gate for those who struggle with sensors; simple fingerprint at the door. |
| Daily deliveries, kids answering the gate, or someone home alone | Touch 300 Pro (1080p doorcam, face, palm vein) | Touch 200D | S$429 + S$319 | See the corridor from your phone before anyone opens up; the door lock stays simple. |
| Design-led home with a slim mortise or deadbolt door | Touch 200 | Touch i19 or i9 Standard | S$319 + S$459 | WiFi lives on the gate lock, so the Standard door lock saves S$40 without losing app features at the entrance. |
| Wants everything on both barriers | Touch 300 Pro | Touch i19 or i9 Premium | S$429 + S$499 | Camera and face at the gate, face and video call at the door. This sits at the top of the bundle range, which ends at S$799. |
The middle rows price between the S$459 floor and the S$799 ceiling; the exact figure appears on the bundle page when you choose the pair. If your main door is fire-rated, confirm the door lock's certification with us first.
How do I move forward?
Decide whether you use one barrier or two, pick the gate lock for visibility and the door lock for speed, and run the checklist above against whichever brand you are considering. If the answer is one lock, buy one lock.
If it is two, the OpenTouch Gate and Door Bundle combines any gate lock with any door lock from the range, from S$459 to S$799 GST-inclusive, with free certified installation and a 2-year local warranty on both locks. Browse the individual models at the OpenTouch store, or send a photo of your gate and door to our Singapore team on WhatsApp at +65 9139 0778 and we will tell you plainly whether a bundle or a single lock makes sense for your entrance.
